Chip, Passport, Tag

Identification of dogs and cats is mandatory under the Veterinary Practice Act in Bulgaria. The means of identification are an injectable transponder, also called a chip, and a standard-format passport.

The chip is a small capsule injected behind the pet's left ear. By law the procedure must be carried out before the dog turns four months old.

The passport follows a standard format, carries a unique number and also serves as a health record.

The tag is a small metal medallion whose colour and shape differ for each calendar year. It is attached to the collar at the time of the rabies vaccination.
