    False Pregnancy in Dogs

Have you noticed your female dog starting to collect various toys and building a nest to hide them in?

If this sounds familiar, then you are dealing, or have dealt, with a false pregnancy.

This is a very common condition in unneutered animals. Statistics show it occurs in 50% of all unspayed female dogs.

On the whole it is not dangerous; in milder cases the symptoms subside on their own without our intervention. It usually takes between 14 and 21 days for the symptoms to disappear.

Increase the walks and reduce the feeding.

In more serious cases milk is produced, which leads to the development of mastitis.

The treatment for pseudocyesis, and its prevention, is spaying.
