    Eye Problems in Rodents

Eye diseases are extremely common in the smallest pets, so it is important to recognise them in time and turn to appropriate therapy.

So far so good, but how do you tell that your little animal has an eye problem?

Here are a few things to watch out for: - Redness - Scratching at the eye, rubbing the face against objects - Frequent blinking or squinting of one or both eyes - Signs of discomfort or pain - Discharge from the eye - Brownish staining of the tears

Possible problems include: - Bacteria - Neoplasia or hyperplasia behind the eye - Some viruses, especially RCV - Fungi or parasites - Allergic reactions

And is there anything you can do so that it never gets as far as the vet? - Always keep the animal's bedding clean - If one animal is ill, limit its contact with the other - Always wash your hands before handling the animal - If you rinse the eyes, never use the same swab for both eyes - Rinse only and exclusively with solutions intended for the purpose!
