    Reverse Sneezing in Dogs

Reverse sneezing is something quite common in dogs, but for an owner who encounters it for the first time the experience can seem terrifying.

WHAT DOES IT LOOK LIKE? During a reverse sneeze the dog extends its head forward, pulls back its lips and takes a series of rapid inhalations through the nose.

WHY DOES IT HAPPEN? The purpose in both conditions is the same – to remove an irritant from the upper airways.

Fun fact: the Chihuahua is the poster breed for reverse sneezing!

THE EXAMINATION During the examination a thorough inspection of the airways and mouth is carried out.

THERAPY When episodes are rare, no therapy is needed.

Tip: If you are not sure but suspect that your dog is reverse sneezing, try to record the episode and show us the video!
