Skin Problems in Dogs and Cats

For us, the doctors at JulyVet veterinary clinic, solving our patients' dermatological problems is of vital importance. Skin problems are not only unpleasant and annoying when it comes to hair loss and itching; they can also be a sign of, or lead to, dangerous diseases.

The skin is a mirror of the body's health.

Itching, sores, flakes, hair loss, pain, redness... Very often owners bring their pets to us complaining of problem skin. Being the largest organ, signs of disease are easy to spot on it.

We must not forget the functions of the skin. It is the body's frontline "combat zone" and at the same time a mirror of internal health.

Fleas, ticks, grass awns, injuries, chemical burns. These are some of the external factors that cause skin problems.

Autoimmune, metabolic, hormonal and neoplastic diseases are the internal factors behind problems with skin manifestations.

Fungi, mange, Malassezia, bacteria, viruses and flea allergy occupy the middle ground.

Treatment of diseases with skin manifestations starts with proper nutrition. The second step is normalising the immune response and the body's hormonal balance.

Remember, the skin is a mirror of health. A visible problem cannot be solved by "painting over" the mirror.
