    Voice Loss in Pets

We notice that as temperatures fall we see more and more hoarse patients coming in for examination. Very often owners are not sure whether they are doing the right thing by bringing their pet in for a check-up.

Yes, dogs and cats, like people, can become hoarse and even lose their voice.

Upper respiratory tract infections: In cats this is the most common cause of a change in voice.

Polyps on the lining of the throat: This is another common condition in cats.

Laryngeal paralysis: This is a condition in dogs in which the nerves controlling the muscles of the larynx weaken.

Poisoning: Some houseplants can cause hoarseness if swallowed.

Too much talking: Just as with us, so with them, overuse of the voice causes hoarseness.

If you notice that your pet's voice is changing or disappearing, book an appointment for an examination.
